Emergency crews are continuing a search after the lower three floors of a seven-storey residential building collapsed on Doğu Street in Cevizli, Maltepe, at about 05:40 on 8 October. Five people, including two children, were initially brought out alive; crews later rescued three more, taking the confirmed total to eight. The earlier official estimate of seven people in the debris was issued before those three rescues and should not be treated as the current number still missing. The cause has not yet been established.
What authorities have confirmed
The building contains 12 apartments and has 33 registered residents. Four apartments across the ground and next two floors were affected; 14 people were registered there and two were confirmed to be away. Officials first reported five rescues and later confirmed that three more people had been brought out, raising the total to eight. Ten people were also evacuated safely from the upper floors. The exact occupancy remains provisional because visitors or residents away from home can change the count.
Access around Doğu Street
Roads leading to the building were closed so rescue vehicles and heavy equipment could operate. People in Cevizli should avoid the cordoned area, follow police and municipal directions, and allow extra time for local journeys. A closure around one street does not mean that all transport across Maltepe has stopped.
If you are trying to reach someone
Use direct calls or messages first and avoid travelling to the rescue perimeter. For an immediate threat to life, call Türkiye's unified emergency number 112. Give the district, neighbourhood, street, building number and the last verified contact time. Do not share names, casualty figures or rescue claims from unverified social-media accounts.
Why the cause is not stated
The remaining floors were described as unstable and teams were entering in a controlled way. Two civil inspectors have been assigned to examine whether public officials had any negligence, fault or responsibility in the building's planning, construction or alteration. That assignment is an investigation, not a finding of liability. The cause remains unknown pending engineering, administrative and judicial work.
Confirmed milestones for the next update
The next material updates are an official restatement of how many people may remain, completion of the search, any wider evacuation decision and a formal finding on the cause. Turkey Compass will keep the figures clearly time-stamped and will not subtract the new rescues from an earlier estimate unless a responsible authority confirms the revised count.
