Türkiye's airports handled 167,552,966 passengers, including direct transit, in the first eight months of 2026, according to DHMİ figures announced by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu on 9 September. The total was 2.8% higher than a year earlier. For international travellers and investors, the useful signal is the scale of the country's hub and resort-airport network; the statistics do not promise a particular route, fare or flight frequency.
August traffic reached 28.79 million passengers
In August alone, airports recorded 11,144,749 domestic passengers and 17,643,496 international passengers. Including direct transit, the total was 28,794,764, up 4.1% year on year. Aircraft movements, including overflights, reached 255,970 and cargo traffic was 567,521 tonnes. The passenger figures count journeys through the network, not unique individuals.
International journeys led the eight-month total
From January through August, domestic traffic was 71,625,767 and international traffic 95,858,691. Aircraft movements including overflights reached 1,619,476, while cargo totalled 3,594,969 tonnes. International volume therefore represented the larger part of passenger activity, but national growth does not mean every airport or route expanded at the same rate.
Istanbul's two hubs carried almost 90 million journeys
Istanbul Airport handled 56,648,965 passengers in eight months, of whom 44,714,313 were international. Sabiha Gökçen recorded 33,156,610 passengers, including 17,894,688 international. The figures underline Istanbul's importance for connections, yet travellers should still check whether a ticket changes airports, requires a fresh baggage check or leaves enough time for the transfer across the city.
Tourism gateways handled about 41.6 million passengers
The ministry reported 25,103,581 passengers at Antalya, 8,925,405 at İzmir Adnan Menderes, 3,726,496 at Dalaman, 3,240,486 at Milas–Bodrum and 615,970 at Gazipaşa–Alanya in the first eight months. These are airport-wide totals across domestic and international journeys. They are useful for comparing gateway scale, not for inferring a direct service from a specific country.
What travellers and property investors should check
Confirm the operating airline, date-specific timetable, baggage rules and arrival airport before booking; seasonal services can change even when an airport's annual traffic rises. For property decisions, airport use can support an accessibility assessment, but it does not establish rental occupancy, resale liquidity or price growth. Test the actual door-to-door transfer time and compare winter as well as summer schedules.
