Suitcases, calculator and expenses for the first month after moving
Turkey Compass editorial graphic

The first month is almost always more expensive than the subsequent ones: a deposit, connection of services, documents and basic purchases for the home are added to the regular budget.

One-time expenses

These include a deposit for housing, possible commissions, translations of documents, registration of communications and first household purchases. These expenses should not be mixed with the monthly cost of living.

Regular budget

The main articles are housing, utilities, food, transport, communications and insurance. The result greatly depends on the city, region and family composition.

Practical reserve

It is wise to add a reserve for unforeseen expenses to the calculated amount and not base the budget on minimum advertising estimates.

Use a cash-flow calendar, not one monthly total

List the payment date and currency of each cost. The first week may include a deposit, agency commission, advance rent, insurance, document translations, utility connections, mobile service and basic furniture. Later weeks bring transport, food, health care and school-related spending. Keep emergency funds separate from the moving budget and do not count a refundable deposit as available cash. Obtain current quotes in the chosen district: national inflation data helps update assumptions, but it cannot price a particular home or household.
