Turkish and Bulgarian officials met at Kapıkule on 11 September and inspected land north of the current crossing for a proposed customs gate called “Kapıkule / Kapitan Andreevo – North”. The project is intended to increase border-crossing capacity on the Türkiye–Bulgaria corridor. It is a planning step, not a new route available to drivers today.
What was agreed and inspected
The meeting brought together Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer, Türkiye’s Deputy Trade Minister Sezai Uçarmak, Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, Haskovo Governor Todor Ivanov and customs and diplomatic officials from both countries. The delegations discussed capacity and then visited the proposed site north of the existing gate.
What has not been announced
The statement gives no construction timetable, opening date, lane count, budget or decision on whether the facility will handle passenger cars, coaches, freight vehicles or a combination. It also does not announce any change to current passport, visa or customs rules.
Why the corridor matters to business
Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo is a major road gateway between Türkiye and the European Union. Additional capacity could eventually improve resilience for freight and passenger traffic, but a project announcement cannot be converted into a guaranteed reduction in queue times or logistics costs.

Continue using only officially operating crossings and check live border and road notices before departure. Do not follow map pins, social posts or navigation suggestions that present the proposed northern site as open. Allow time for checks at the existing external EU border, especially during seasonal peaks.
