Turkey's state weather service has expanded its heavy-rain alerts for Tuesday, 6 October. Warning No. 500 covers parts of eastern and southeastern Turkey from 12:00 to 22:00. A separate Warning No. 499 covers coastal Hatay and the southern and eastern parts of Osmaniye from 03:00 to 15:00. MGM lists flash floods, local flooding, lightning, hail, strong wind and transport disruption among the possible effects. These are regional hazard alerts, not a nationwide travel ban or confirmation that a particular road, flight, train or coach service is cancelled.
What changed after the original 5 October warning
The first forecast highlighted Malatya, Elazığ and Adıyaman through early Tuesday. The two newer official warnings move the focus to Tuesday itself and broaden the affected area. Travellers should therefore use the newer time windows and district-level wording rather than relying only on the original Monday forecast.
Eastern alert runs from noon to 22:00
Warning No. 500 names Bingöl, Muş, Bitlis, Tunceli, Elazığ and Hakkari; eastern Siirt and Şırnak; northern Diyarbakır, Batman and Adıyaman; and southern Malatya, Van and Erzurum. After noon, Kars, Ağrı and Iğdır are also included. The warning says rain may become locally heavy, so conditions can differ sharply between neighbouring districts.
Hatay and Osmaniye have an earlier warning window
Warning No. 499 begins at 03:00 and ends at 15:00 on Tuesday. It covers coastal parts of Hatay and the southern and eastern parts of Osmaniye. MGM additionally lists a coastal tornado risk, along with flash floods, local flooding, lightning, hail, strong wind and transport disruption. The warning does not say that every district in either province will experience the same conditions.
What travellers should check before departure
Allow extra road time, avoid flooded underpasses and stream beds, and never enter moving water. Check MGM radar together with the airline, TCDD, bus operator or local authority for the specific route. An alert alone does not cancel transport; only the operator or competent authority can confirm a closure. Call 112 only for an actual emergency.
