Türkiye's retail trade sales volume rose 10.4% in July 2026 from a year earlier, while the broader trade sales volume fell 0.6%, according to TÜİK data released on 11 September. The result is not contradictory: retail was positive, but vehicle-related trade fell 9.8% and wholesale trade fell 4.2%. For an international investor, the figures are a useful demand signal, not proof that every consumer business or city is expanding.

Retail and total trade measure different baskets

The total index combines motor vehicles and motorcycles, wholesale trade and retail trade. A strong retail reading can therefore coexist with a weaker total when the other two components contract. Applying the 10.4% retail increase to the whole Turkish economy would overstate what the release says.

The monthly picture was much softer

Compared with June after seasonal adjustment, retail sales volume rose only 0.2% and vehicle-related trade rose 0.9%. Wholesale volume fell 4.5%, pulling total trade volume down 2.5% in one month. The annual and monthly comparisons answer different questions and should not be mixed.

Volume is not revenue or profit

A volume index is designed to track the quantity of sales after removing price effects. It does not show a company's lira revenue, margin, rent burden, financing cost or cash flow. Inflation can lift nominal turnover even when real volumes are flat or falling, so business plans need both price and volume assumptions.

What foreign founders and investors should check

Use city- and sector-level evidence: footfall, online conversion, average ticket, import dependence, rent, payroll, taxes and working-capital needs. Test the model under weaker wholesale supply and higher financing costs. A national retail rise does not guarantee demand for a particular product, district or price point.

Turkey Compass verdict

Accurate: retail sales volume was 10.4% higher than a year earlier. Also accurate: total trade volume was 0.6% lower. Misleading: saying all trade grew 10.4%, or treating the retail index as a direct measure of household welfare, company turnover or investment return.
